Jonathan Moore - Writer

"Jonathan Moore... the Johnny Rotten of the British Theatre." (The London Evening Standard)

"A singular voice for his generation." (Time Out)

An award winning playwright, Jonathan Moore has written eleven stage plays since his play "Treatment" was first performed at The Edinburgh Festival.

Subsequent performances have taken place at the Gate theatre, the Donmar, London, and a BBC Film version starring Moore and Gabriel Byrne. This powerful and angrily poetic play was acclaimed as "one of the most disturbing and exhilarating plays in London" (Mark Lawson, The Independent). He has recently finished the second draft of a new play commission.

He has written as well for TV, film and the BBC, and several texts for contemporary opera for major British and International Opera Houses. See credits for details.

At the beginning of his career, Jonathan was the recipient of an Arts Council Bursary as Writer In Residence at The Albany Empire, the community theatre in Deptford, South East London. He worked with local writers in developing new scripts.

Moore's plays have been performed at the Donmar, Gate Theatre, the Almeida (opera text), Royal Exchange, and the Edinburgh Festival.

He is the recipient of numerous commissions, including a National Theatre commission. He wrote several episodes of "Crown Court" for Granada TV, "Treatment", a BBC Film, and the libretto for "Horse Opera" a Western filmed opera shot in Tucson, Arizona for Channel 4 with music by Stewart Copeland. A collection of Moore's plays has been published by Aurora Metro Press.

He co wrote "On The Verge", the comedy tv pilot.

He is currently working on a new opera libretto, stage play and feature film script.

His latest play INIGO had a successful off WEST End RUN, and subsequent transfer to the main house Pleasance, London. It is published by Aurora Metro, London. To order http://aurorametro.com/products-page/new-titles/inigo/.

"Impressive...entertaining. Enlightening."
★★★★ LondonTheatre1

"Historically accurate, comic and thought-provoking while still incredibly relevant."
★★★★ Plays To See

"Lovely moments of religious poetry and pragmatic comedy...given the current activity in Rome, this is a particularly pertinent time for this story of humility"
★★★★ The Stage

"Brilliantly written and acted...a great evening of thoughtful and dynamic theatre"
Mark Lawson (Writer, Arts Broadcaster and Journalist)

"The intelligence of the production, and especially the vitality and versatility of the performances make for a moving, stimulating and enjoyable experience. The structure and dynamism of the play, the art with which Jonathan Moore makes Ignatius accessible to us, capturing much of the drama of the Spiritual Exercises themselves, would also make ‘Iñigo’ an excellent discovery for schools and colleges. I hope that is something we may look forward to."
James Hanvey , Master of Campion Hall, Oxford University. (on thinkingfaith.org)

"Condensing a life so full of internal struggle, complex relationships and momentous incident into two hours of drama is an astonishing achievement. Jonathan Moore has honed the story with skill and passion and also a good measure of humour."
Jane Hellings, Jesuits and Friends
