30th Anniversary Production: Moore and Turnage’s opera is now a 'modern classic'

Since its debut, Jonathan went on to co-direct the BBC’s award-winning 1990 film adaptation of Greek, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The work has gone on to international success, being described as “a modern classic” (Fergus Linehan, Director of the Edinburgh International Festival), and is performed regularly at major opera houses worldwide.

Most recently, Jonathan directed the 30th-anniversary production with full orchestra at the Arcola Theatre and is now preparing a revival in London’s East End, where the opera is set.

"Expect to be deafened, disturbed and at times aghast at the sheer outrageousness of it both musically and verbally. Staged in all sorts of ways over the years, this is as good as it gets."
